Murad-ı Buhârî Dervish Lodge
A Century-Old Centre of Knowledge and Gnosis
The Murad-ı Buhârî Dervish Lodge, situated at the heart of Eyüpsultan and carrying a deeply rooted history extending from the 17th century to the present day, holds the distinction of being the first centre of the Mujaddidiyya branch of the Naqshbandi order in Anatolia. Originally built as a madrasa by the Chief Justice of Anatolia, Çankırılı Dâmâd Mustafa Efendi, this space was subsequently dedicated by the Şeyhülislâm (Chief Islamic Jurist) Dâmâdzâde Ebülhayr Ahmed Efendi to the great scholar and saint Sheikh Muhammed Murad-ı Buhârî, who converted it into a dervish lodge.
Sheikh Murad-ı Buhârî, a figure of learning and gnostic wisdom, a man of spiritual unveiling, guided many students here and left a significant mark upon the world of scholarship and Sufism in Ottoman society. The Sahîh-i Buhârî lectures that continue to be held at the lodge to this day are among the most living examples of a centuries-old tradition of knowledge and gnosis.
In the history of the lodge, Şeyhülislâm Hacı Veliyyüddin Efendi holds a special importance. One of the leading scholars and calligraphers of the Ottoman State, Veliyyüddin Efendi was appointed Şeyhülislâm twice in the 18th century and was known for his passion for knowledge and the arts. He made great contributions to the architectural integrity of the lodge, commissioning the construction of the mosque that still welcomes visitors today with its spiritual atmosphere. Equally known for his charitable character, Veliyyüddin Efendi endowed his extensive lands for the benefit of society. It is known that, through his love of nature and aesthetic values, he was devoted to horticulture — particularly tulips, which hold an important place in Ottoman culture — and carried out various works and discoveries in this field. After his death, in accordance with his will, he was buried in the lodge's hazîre, thereby securing for himself a permanent place in the spiritual identity of this site.
Restored through extensive conservation work and revived anew, the lodge offers its visitors a serene atmosphere through its sections comprising a mosque, a semahane (ritual hall), a türbe (mausoleum), dervish cells, a şadırvan (ablution fountain) and the Muhammed Kethüda Fountain. Whilst tracing the footprints of the past to the accompaniment of the sound of water and fragrant roses in the garden, you will have an unparalleled experience that will allow your soul to rest. This site, which throughout history has been distinguished by the importance it attaches to knowledge and technology, reflects a vision far ahead of its time: the presence of one of the first three bicycles to arrive in the Ottoman State, and the communication system installed between the selamlık (men's quarters) and harem (women's quarters).
Murad-ı Buhârî Dervish Lodge is a rare place where worship, knowledge, gnosis and a virtuous life are taught; where the peace of the past meets the sincerity of the present. For those who wish to breathe in this spiritual atmosphere on Eid days, it is a most meaningful destination.
